SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. — October 31, 2026. San Luis Obispo County Public Works is repairing parts of the Salinas water pipeline along U.S. Highway 101 near Santa Margarita, with work scheduled to continue through November 9, 2026.
According to the county’s September 28 construction notice, the project began October 5 and involves replacing two deteriorated sections of a pipeline that is approximately 85 years old. The line carries raw water from Salinas Reservoir, also known as Santa Margarita Lake, to the City of San Luis Obispo water treatment plant.
Where drivers may see work
Crews are working along the southbound shoulder of Highway 101 between Tassajara Creek Road and Cuesta Springs Road. The county says movements of heavy equipment and traffic-control installation are restricted to 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., when drivers may encounter delays of up to approximately 10 minutes. The notice does not anticipate construction-related daytime delays between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Project budget and contractor
Rob Reynolds Construction, Inc. received the $423,653.33 contract, financed through local City of San Luis Obispo funds. The repair is intended to reduce the risk of a water-transmission failure; it should not be confused with repairs to Santa Margarita’s own CSA 23 local drinking-water distribution system.
What residents should verify
A schedule is not a guarantee that work or road restrictions are occurring at a particular moment. Before driving, consult Caltrans QuickMap and updated county road notices. Follow flaggers and construction signs.
