SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. — October 31, 2026. Boaters and campers visiting Santa Margarita Lake should review several current county park rules before heading to the reservoir.
The San Luis Obispo County Parks lake page states that beginning January 1, 2026, Santa Margarita Lake and Lopez Lake require a 30-day quarantine for boats with internal ballast tanks or ballast bags, such as certain wakeboarding and ski boats. The county no longer accepts bleach decontamination as a substitute for that rule.
Invasive mussel inspections
All boats must pass an initial inspection under Clean, Drain and Dry procedures before receiving a quarantine tag, the county says. These restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of introducing invasive quagga, zebra and golden mussels to local waterways.
Park officials also warn that clear tags from other lakes are not interchangeable with Santa Margarita Lake tags under the county’s current system. Check directly with the marina before towing a vessel to the park.
Fire and wildlife notices
The county’s parks alerts page lists a seasonal fire ban beginning May 20, 2026. It also reports increased bear activity in campground areas. Campers should secure food, trash and scented items; never approach bears or feed wildlife; and check posted fire restrictions at arrival.
What visitors can still do
Santa Margarita Lake offers fishing, boating, hiking, picnic areas and primitive campsites. Swimming in the reservoir remains prohibited unless and until additional required regulatory steps are completed; a recently enacted state law does not automatically make body-contact recreation lawful.
Contact the park at 805-788-2397 before traveling for inspection instructions, ramp availability and updated rules. The park is at 4695 Santa Margarita Lake Road.
